Poland will support a draft agreement on scrapping the visa regime between Russia and the EU, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said following a meeting with his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski.
President Dmitry Medvedev passed the document to the European partners at the Russia-EU summit in Rostov-on-Don earlier this year.
“We hope to get a prompt and positive response from Brussels. The Polish side has confirmed that it is going to support the project,” Lavrov told a media conference on the results of the meeting in Warsaw, cites RIA Novosti.
The foreign minister also noted that the relations between Russia and Poland – which had been rather tense for years – are currently on the rise. To some extent the April 10 Smolensk air crash, which killed 96 people including Polish President Lech Kaczynski, has helped the two nations to reconcile.
“The reason for that is not only the Smolensk tragedy that truly united our peoples,” Lavrov said. It was also thanks to peoples’ desire for building good neighborly relations, he added.
Another sign of warming in the relation relations, RadosÅ‚aw Sikorski has promised that Warsaw will give its backing to the “Partnership for modernization” initiative proposed at the Russia-EU summit in Stockholm in 2009.
He said that both Russia and Poland have chosen a path to modernization. “We are glad that our countries have the same understanding of the modernization. It includes not only technical and economic development, but also an improvement of social-democratic mechanisms,” Sikorski said.
He added that Poland will strive for the “demilitarization of Russian-Polish relations in favor of the development of economic cooperation.”

You are right armen08...Poland try to rise to the occasion. Somehow this historic misstrust have to be crossed and I hope it will! I am aware also that Poland move on other side to , by try to have a Usa base(useless and unhealty thing) at the same time..I say, as long as this friendy process started between Russia and Poland-there is a real chance to turn tide in otherway....I welcome Poland support for a free visa travel (EU-Russia) but i will also say this is in best EU intrest...Some others states in Europe, have a free travel visa regime with Russia and EU shall follow as a whole.Iin general, this shall happend for many others reasons-Eu and Russia are two parts of the same body so people shall travel free...I hope that EU will become truly independent and free(from foreign forces) one day and make with Russia the closest possible ties....In my opinion ,all European(EU,Russia and other states on European land)citizens shall be able to travel free in their own home-Europe as a whole! Visa travel as a word ,shall be wiped out among all Europeans states -once and for all....Thanke you.

I am sorry guys's but I think this is all a pipe dream while US missiles and bases are in and moving to Poland. Yes I support any effort towards better relations, but history is littered with good intentions. So from a military perspective we have to judge the deeds, and if you are moving hostile military assets towards me, I will need react. So it becomes laughable, we are moving towards de-militarisation with US missiles and bases on one side, and tactical nuclear weapons on our side. Seems a little at odds to the advertisement to me. So to be honest, if Poland is serious about this then the US missiles need to go. This won't happen, so draw your own conclusions where we are really going with this, best buddies with a gun to each others head, seems like a perfect relationship, doesn't it! So what is the deal, we support you with Visas as long as you let us militarily threaten your security. Strange to say the least!
