Politkovskaya's killer hoped to 'intimidate journalists and authorities' - investigator

The assassination of journalist Anna Politkovskaya wasn’t just retaliation for her investigative reporting – it was also meant to send a message, a senior investigator involved in the ongoing high-profile case claimed.

After studying the last six years of Politkovskaya’s life “under a microscope,” senior investigator Petros Garibyan is convinced that the murder of Politkovskaya was designed to send a disturbing message.

"In my opinion, the person who ordered the crime did not seek to take revenge on Anna Politkovskaya for her critical articles alone,” Garibyan said in an interview published in Kommersant on Friday. “First and foremost, he needed a demonstrative, high-profile act aimed at intimidating… journalists, society and the authorities."

Whoever was behind the contract killing apparently intended to send a powerful message to authorities, since the 47-year-old Politkovskaya was killed on October 7 – Russian President Vladimir Putin's birthday.

It was not simply a coincidence, since the killer had “every chance to commit the crime earlier,” Garibyan noted.

On October 7, 2006, Politkovskaya was found dead in the entrance of her apartment building. Given the nature of the murder – she had been shot twice in the chest, once in the shoulder and once in the head at point-blank range – it was described by investigators as a contract killing.

When some quarters of society suggested that Politkovskaya was killed due to her criticism of the state authorities in their handling of the Chechen conflict, President Putin publicly asserted that the authorities had absolutely nothing to gain from her death.

Though Politkovskaya was “well-known in journalistic circles,” her influence on political life in Russia “was minimal,” Putin said shortly after her death.

“In my opinion murdering such a person certainly does much greater damage from the authorities’ point of view, authorities that she strongly criticized, than her publications ever did," the Russian leader said.

Meanwhile, the investigation never focused on several individuals who some believed were possible suspects in the case.

Garibyan noted that there has “never been any reason to question” Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, nor the former Chechen militants’ envoy Akhmed Zakayev, although much of Politkovskaya’s writings harshly condemned human rights violations that took place during the Chechen conflict.

Investigators also decided not to question Boris Berezovsky, the Russian businessman living in self-imposed exile in London, despite his publicly declared desire to foment civil unrest in Russia.

Garibyan said there was an “absence of reliable information” implicating any of these individuals in the crime, he said.

It is sad to see a person attempting to help others, simply killed by those who hope to gain materialistically... As I understand Russia has done a good job investigating and found the killers.

RT now knows "part" of a similar situation in the U.S.; hopefully all the information can be printed in the near future.  The U.S. Government knows the details (Many in the U.S. Government are of the highest of integrity, but some are the opposite, to gain personally).  Once the details are released, the blatant attempt to kill a person in the U.S., who merely tried to help others, will shock many around the world........  If it had been a woman targeted, she would not have been able to defend herself and would have been killed by criminals, as the woman was in Russia....... However it was a man and he was able to defend himself a bit though his right hand had to be put back together by a microhand surgeon (RT has the pictures)........... I hope President Obama stands up demanding a full "proper" investigation, as Mr. Putin has done in Russia....

Ironically these criminals were also doing a blog of President Obama's wife being a politically connected thief in Chicago.  ........ In the U.S. money can buy potection from almost anything, and these criminals are spreading it around.

Most likely she was murdered on orders from Berezovsky who has been trying to smear Putin for years with all kinds of dirt. That is why she was murdered on Putin's birthday. Anti-Putin propagandists have been pushing the idea that government is behind her murder.

''SNAFU'' and ''Just saying'' - thanks for the kind feedback above.
As said, I only presented some points. I am an amateur commenter of geopolitics, I am thus far from claiming to be able to know. All I do above is simply stating the fact that we have at hand and these show that the Russian state had 7 whole years to deal with Politosvkaya in numerous ways which was not done while on the contrary her life was repeatedly protected by people wishing her dead - so for one to claim this was a murder ordered by the Russian state he will have to explain ''what changed'' with Politovskaya and suddently the state remembered to murder her. I think this is case is a minimal one. Kadyrof, a young impulsive Chechen leader whom Politovskaya accused of political murders can be a possibility but only in case he acted on his own or a henchman of his acted on his own - however the timeline proves Kadyrof of being a smart man that does not do sloppy jobs and who consults the Russian intelligence before doing anything. Afterall, what if Politovskaya accused him of murders? Did Kadyrof run any serious risk of Russian justice (or any international court? unbelievable!) arresting him? Of course not! Kadyrof  - like him or not - has pacified the region after he took power in no time - a testament to his ability as a politicla leader, he was thus far from being hintered by Politovskaya's investigations.
S o the primary suspects are indeed in the West. This is the period when Russia signed the gas deals with Bulgaria, Greece and Italy - which is also at the root of the Anglosaxon-caused EU crisis (it is not really the American subprime banking collapse as claimed...). Anglosaxon media, in the light of US fail to ignite further Chechenia and Dagestan, was throwing tons of venom against Russia depicting Putin as a dictator, accusing him of murders like Litvinenko's etc. Under that light, the murder of Politovskaya was indeed quite usefull since it was a piece of news that made the round and is still used as per 2012, used by the Navalnys and the Udaltsevs and the Kasparovs that US pays to organise opposition to Putin.
Sounds too much? Not at all. Even for a 5 minutes Anglo-propaganda the British and the Americans would not hesitate to sacrifice the life of someone, even one of them. We cannot know for sure who killed her but all elements point rather to the west than to Chechenia or Moscow.
