In light of America and NATO’s blunt refusal to cooperate with Russia on a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe, Russia has put the development of new offensive weapons on the fast track.

Vladimir Kozin, the leading researcher at the Russian Strategic Research Institute (RISI), praised the test launch on Wednesday of a new intercontinental ballistic missile, saying it is an important step to further perfecting Russia's strategic offensive weapons

"The new missile project is a step in the right direction at a time when the United States is engaged in…large-scale modernization of its strategic and tactical nuclear potentials, and amid the continuing deployment of the European and global missile defense systems,” he said.

The researcher said the US system targeted Russia's “national interests and defense nuclear potential," a view held by many Russian military analysts.

Defense Ministry spokesman Vadim Koval said the first launch of the prototype missile, which successfully hit a target on the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, took place at the Plesetsk launchpad in northern Russia.

"The launch was conducted using a mobile launch vehicle by RVSN combat units and the Aerospace Defense Forces," the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Kozin, who is a member of the Experts Council of the Kremlin's Interagency Group for Interaction on Missile Defense with NATO, pointed to NATO's recent summit, where it was decided to “form a sort of Chicago triad – a radically new decision to combine nuclear and conventional weapons, together with the missile defense system, into one strategic fist."

Such a development, says Kozin, presents a real threat to Russia and its allies.

"Such a combination carries even more threats for Russia and its allies and friends, than a separately operating missile shield," according to the top-ranking missile researcher. "Washington, as NATO's May summit demonstrated, continues to neglect the Russian leadership's concerns about the absolutely unjustified assembly of a multi-layered missile defense structure near the Russian borders, as well as Russia's proposals to form a less provocative, but more efficient missile defense structure."

Russia must take adequate counter-measures and develop advanced means to penetrate the US-NATO missile defense infrastructure and, concurrently, to depreciate their nuclear-missile potential, he added.

What? Australia a member of NATO?  Not at all.  NATO stands for "North >ATLANTIC< Treaty Organisation". SOME countries in the North Atlantic ocean area belong to NATO (not all).

Australia has legacy treaty links to several countries in NATO, but it is not obligated to come to the military assistance of Australia.  Australia learned from WWI and WWII that it could not rely on Europe, and that in most respects Europe was a net strategic liability as the vast bulk of our defense forces were bled away to defend and be attrited protecting European powers, plus retaking states from Italy and Germany rather than being within our own region, to face a regional threat here.

This was a serious strategic misalignment and a lesson we have never forgotten.  We deal with the US in large measure because their defense and regional stability interests coincide in many respects with our own needs. The USA is in NATO, Australia is not and will not be becoming a part of it.

It is entirely natural for Indonesian to feel threatened by a more sophisticated and mobile military force in Australia but it's not there to combat or infringe on Indonesia, it's because we have an extremely large continent that is very rich and a tasty looking morsel, for much larger powers than Indonesia.  The ADF is there to make it look a lot less attractive for a large power to consider trying to take it by force.

It is very regrettable that a token-size element of the ADF is deployed and engaged in supporting very dumb and unproductive wars in the Middle East with NATO, which very few here support nor want to see continue.

Wha t Australia wants is a strong cohesive inter-cooperative South East Asia that is capable of deterring and defeating any extra territorial destabiliser, intruder, or new claimant upon the territory of another country in the region, by a large power.  And that has been going on lately, due to Beijing making claims and deploying the PLAN.

So by all means, yes, Indonesia needs a more capable military but not due to Australia being a strategic danger or threat to Indonesia.

Australia has legacy historic alliance and treaty links to several countries in NATO but NATO is not obligated to come to the military assistance of Australia, nor Australia to Europe's.  Australia learned from WWI and WWII that it absolutely could not rely on Europe to defend it, and that in most respects Europe was a net strategic liability, as the vast bulk of our defense forces were bled away to defend and be attrited protecting European powers and retaking states from Italy and Germany, rather than being within our own region to face any regional threat here ... like Japan.

That was a serious strategic mistake, and one we have never forgotten.  We deal with the US in large measure because their defense and regional stability interests coincide, in many (certainly not all) respects, with our own needs.

It is entirely natural for Indonesian to feel threatened by a far more sophisticated and mobile military force in Australia, but it's not there to combat or infringe on Indonesia (which is not to imagine that it never would, of course), it's because we have an extremely large continent, that is very rich and a tasty looking morsel.  The ADF is there to make it look a LOT less appetising for a large power to consider trying to take it.

It is very regrettable that a token-size element of the ADF is deployed and engaged in supporting very dumb and unproductive wars in the Middle East, that very few here support, nor want to be doing.

What Australia wants is a strong cohesive inter-cooperative South East Asian states that are capable to deter and defeat an extra territorial destabiliser, intruder, or new claimant upon the territory of any country in this region, by any large power.  And this has been going on lately and it's all coming from Beijing and the PLAN.

So by all means, yes, Indonesia needs a more capable military, but not due to Australia per-sec, and definitely not due to mutual defense links or cooperation and exercises with NATO.

The USA is in NATO, Australia is not, and will not be becoming a part of it at any point.  Our defense interests are predominantly in defending South East Asia from any external aggression projecting combat forces into this part of the world.
