Imposing sanctions on riot-stricken Libya, as proposed by the EU and the US, is an unproductive measure, Russia’s Foreign Ministry has asserted.

Russia completely opposes any hostile measures to the conflict in Libya, Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Aleksander Lukashevich said on Thursday in Moscow.

“Speaking about recent events in Libya, the Middle East and North Africa, we take the stance that hostility is inadmissible,” Lukashevich said. “Aggression only tightens the knot around the problem.”

But he was also critical of a solution involving sanctions.

“Sanctions sometimes work, but we can hardly say that they have been an effective tool wielded by the international community to influence the situation,” he pointed out.

On Wednesday, the European Union, led by France promised to consider sanctions against Libya, where the country’s strongman, Muammar Gaddafi has violently suppressed mass public protests against his rule.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has suggested cutting off all economic ties between the EU and Libya in response to the violence.

According to various estimates, the crackdown on protesters in Libya has resulted in deaths ranging from 300 to 1,000 people.

Has not the world powers learnt yet. Since the most strong sanctions ever to be imposed to any nation, to a small island in the caribbean (Cuba) 50 years ago they could not remove the Castros brother from power. AFTER 50 years they have not achieved a thing. Sanctions ONLY, ONLY, ONLY and I can not get tired to repeat the word ONLY will make suffer the people of the country and NOT, NOT, NOT the government that rules the people. ONLY despot powers with no regard for human being and the poor people will enjoy and propose to put sanctions to another country. Bottom line, the History has spoken and FACTS can not be refute by babbling in this website. Lybia itself was under sanctions for over 35 years and did not change a thing. Was Facebook and the information people can share today in the world that spark the conscious of the new generations, also we are living on 2011, every thing that happens ONLY happens when it reaches it mature point and no external forces will change the heart and mind of the people. Sanctio ns will only hurt the population and not the government. PERIOD.

In my personal view, sanctions against any failed state would simply result in the enabling of power brokerage and bolster illegal arms smuggling. &nbs p;Fighting a revolution and/or war as well as supressing an uprising (reestablishing clientelism), demands established logistics (which the Lybian governme nt has) as well as willing paricipants regardless of origin (implicitly deduced).  No doubt this posses tremendous barriers to diplomacy and peace, but I feel that sanctions would only allow for the minimalization  of Lybia's socio-political development. &n bsp;Not to mention the potential for a global Islamic narrative containing elements of anti-semitism / imperialism.
