A 21-year-old Russian soldier has been killed and another injured in an armed attack in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan.

Local police say a group of unidentified gunmen opened fire on Russian servicemen on Sunday night in the Dagestani city of Khasavyurt.

It's thought the military personnel were part of a unit traveling from the republic of Chechnya.

And, in a separate incident, a senior anti-organised crime official has been murdered in the city of Nazran, in the southern Russian republic of Ingushetia.

Bambuat Bogulov was reportedly riding his bicycle in the city centre on Sunday night, when a group of unknown gunmen opened fire. He died at the scene.

A criminal investigation has been launched into both incidents.
