Iran is prepared for any potential attack, but it’s unlikely Israel would launch a military strike, Dr Seyed Mohammad Marandi from the University of Tehran told RT.

“I don’t think Israel will launch a military strike because it would have to have the consent of US. American forces based in Iraq, in Turkey and in the Persian Gulf region, which stand between the two countries. And if the Israelis attacked Iran, that would mean that the US was a part of that attack and they would have to expect retaliation from Iran,” he said.

However, he added, Iran’s response to any potential attack “would be severe”. For the last few years, Iran has been preparing itself for any potential threat.

“So, I do think that Iran is prepared but I don’t think any strike will happen anytime in the near future,” Dr Marandi added.

Meir Javedanfar, Director at the Middle East Economic and Political Analysis, agrees that a military attack is unlikely.

“I think the Israeli government is very much interested in a peaceful solution to the current crisis,” he said. “There’s a lot of hope in the upcoming negotiations between Iran and the US that both sides can work the differences out over a negotiation table. This outcome would be for the benefit of Israel and the entire region.”

As for UN sanctions against Tehran, Meir Javedanfar believes they should be targeted against the Iranian leadership and their assets.

“First of all, we have to hope that negotiations work. If they don’t work, I think the sanctions for them to work should not target the people of Iran. The people are not guilty…,” he said.

“I particularly don’t think that President Ahmadinejad cares about their suffering, from what we can see on the streets of Tehran and from the violent crackdown against Iranian demonstrators,” he added.

Don't think for a minute that Israel would hesitate, as for the Americans being in the middle, ha. they have no qualms shedding American blood. When was the last time Iran invaded anyone?..oh right about a 100yrs ago. Now how many sovereign states has America "liberated/pacified" in the last 100? We've all been duped, all these wars are about the globalist bankster drive for one world government. Who do you think has funded all of them. Russians hold dear your new won freedoms, be the Republic it can be, remember democracy is just tyranny of the majority.

reply@Meir Javedanfar, Director at the Middle East Economic and Political Analysis Quote “...I think the sanctions for them to work should not target the people of Iran. The people are not guilty…, I particularly don’t think that President Ahmadinejad cares about their suffering, from what we can see on the streets of Tehran and from the violent crackdown against Iranian demonstrators,” Mr. Javedanfar, I thought you are an economic and political analysis, do you really think that sanctions against a countries leadership will spare the people; by hurting the government, you are hurting the people and I don't think you even care about the people. Also go and ask the people yourself, see how many support the government's nuclear energy program. About the elections, fair and square, you cannot rig an election by 11 million votes. Riotes happen all over the world not just Iran and riot police are called upon to disperse the crowd. President Ahmadinejad has a large fan club in Iran, especailly with the poor, doesn't that say he cares about his people. It is people like you who want to divide Iran, reinstate the pro-western dictator shah, take the oil and gas and other resources for free etc. Iran is the second country to suffer from WMD, after Japan, and the first to suffer from chemical weapons - Therefor It is against such weapons Iran has never started a war, it is always on the defensive reply@simon You do not have a single evidance to suggest Iran is pursuing illegeal nuclear weapons, the media is a tool of propaganda that all nations use. The leaders of Iran make anti-Israeli rhetoric because it is on the Palastinian side and anti-American rhetoric because of its support of Israel. Iran has a diferent Terrorist list, USA, UK, AL-Qaida and Israel are the top terrorist groups in the world. There is a holocaust happening right now to Palastinians. Are Israel's nuclear weapons legal?

He Simon! Tell us when was the last time Iran invade a country? Also can you tell us what good is a so called Treaty today? I don't even understand the term 'NATO Allies' anymore. Do you remember who said:"Punish France, Ignore Germany and forgive to Russia." not so long ago. Even news can't be trusted. I live in Canada and I must read the news from different countries to get a sens of truth of what is going on every day. The lonely think I am sure now is that Russia is lucky to have Putin part of its elite and wish the elite here in Canada start to work as hard to protect its country and improve our life standards! Even the term 'rights' has no meaning anymore since you must be rich to protect them. Ahmadinejad this Ahmadinejad that....yes yes yes...let me tell you something my friend. Look at the map and count the number of US flags around Iran and you will start saying anything too. He is afraid that all!
