There’s no military solution to the Afghan war, as the Soviet Union found out in the late 1980s. The conflict has to be ended through negotiation, University of Kent professor Richard Sakwa told RT.

Russian skies are now open to US military planes destined for Afghanistan. The agreement was signed during Barack Obama's visit to Moscow this past July, and is aimed at helping the peacekeeping effort.

The new transport route is set to become an alternative to the increasingly dangerous passage through Pakistan.

It is also seen as an opportunity for the US and Russia to improve relations.

Is your network Russia Today or America Today? There are fewer news about Russia than U.S., why are you so obsessed with American News? I thought the essence of this channel was to show the world Russia. Now you are showing us United States. We know where to find American news when we want to. Thanks

AGREED. As indicated, Russia learned a war in the 1980's was virtually impossible to win unless there was a desire to bomb the country out of existance. America, and the UN, need to remove all military operations to a corner of the country if there is a reason for us to be there. I feel the lives of our military, which we respect, are more important than anything that can be accomplished by staying in an impossible situation in that forsaken country.

There is never a solution to any conflict to sort out by fighting and have young soldiers being slaughtered every day. It does not matter who get killed they are all human beings. All sides should find a way to sit around a table. Efforts should be made to settle. Russia never won and USA had bad experience in Vietnam before . You cannot fight the enemy in their home land. It's very difficult to tell who is friend and who is enemy
